Our Role

POLICY FRAMEWORK

The Ministry of Industry & Tourism is considered one of the lead growth sectors in the economy and is expected to contribute significantly to national development objectives. These include growth in GDP, job creation, business development, and increase in foreign exchange earnings, poverty alleviation and social stability.

The Policies, which provide the framework for the development of the Corporate Plan, are

  1. The Master Plan for Sustainable Tourism Development (The Tourism Master Plan)
  2. The National Industrial Policy
  3. Public Sector Modernization Vision & Strategy 2002 -2012 (Ministry Paper # 56/02)
  4. JASPEV (Jamaica Social Policy Evaluation) 2002 – 2015

PRIORITY PROGRAMMES

At the macro level, the Ministry's Priority Programmes involve facilitating the ongoing development of the Industrial, Tourism and Entertainment Sectors. The linking of Industry, Tourism and Entertainment is fortuitous since it allows for maximum exploitation of the natural synergies that exist. For example there are forward linkages with Tourism and Entertainment and backward linkages with Tourism and manufacturing, Agro-business, small business development and the availability of adequate factory space.

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT & ALLIANCES

In order for the Ministry to achieve its own objectives and the ultimate outcome of sustainable growth and development for Jamaica, it must develop a number of strategic alliances. One of the most important steps is to develop and strengthen the alliances with our Industry, Tourism and Entertainment partners and stakeholders and we must also work closely with the relevant agencies in the public sector.

Hence the Jamaica Manufacturers Association (JMA), the Small Business Association of Jamaica (SBAJ), the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), the Jamaica Association of Villas and Apartments (JAVA), U Drive JUTA, CRAFT TRADERS, Jamaica Federation of Musicians and affiliated Artistes (JFM), The Jamaica Film and Video Producers Association, The Jamaica Association of Dramatic Artistes (JADA). JAMPRO, Ministry of Land & Environment, Parish Councils etc., are just some of the organizations with which the Ministry must work very closely
